Bombay Royale ” Monkey Fights Snake”

Bombay Royale has this record called You Me Bullets Love which actually exactly describes what the record is like. It’s a kind of charming,  novelty record that cleverly melds 1970s Bollywood scores, 60s surf guitar and a little bit of something else. Not sure if that something else is 1960s Mexico or the American Western though. It’s a lot to take in and can be unbearably dense at points but for the most part it’s a super fun record. Grab a song and put it on a mix for a friend or something.

The best thing about this blog…

is that I actually describe everything as “good” “great” or “bad” so you have to figure out what everything sounds like on your own.

Ty Segall, White Fence, Strange Boys & The Men @ Webster Hall

So after work yesterday I video-chatted with my friend Erin, who is out in Chicago running a little label, and we had a Google+ Hangout drink together (it’s not drinking alone if the people you’re talking to on the internet are also drinking!!!). I had like, ya know, a fairrrllly large amount of red wine (keeping it classy) and then drunk carried myself to Webster Hall for a really expensive show.

so that explains the last three posts.

Guys, I have to say, I was really worried about this show. The bill was Ty Segall, White Fence, The Strange Boys and The Men which is a killer lineup that would do well under a lot of circumstances but here were the circumstances: A Wednesday night, in Manhattan at a 1400 cap room for 15 bucks (23 after Ticket Master gypping). That’s a fucking tough sell. Even yours truly, Ty Segall’s #1 fan, had a hard time pressing the purchase button. But holy shit it sold out. IT SOLD OUT AND IT WAS AWESOME.

The Men: They were okay.  I wasn’t super into their set list. I think it was all new songs. some 15 year olds moshed for like 4 seconds and I felt really sad for them. “mosh mosh! okay, I’m tired, let’s just relax guys, RELAX, CAN YOU STOP PUSHING? CAN YOU STOP??” - 15 year old boys at the show during The Men. So that was a thing. The one awesome part was that there was no line for the ladies room! Thanks The Men for having a largely teen boy fanbase. I went to the bathroom/bar like 4 times (just because I COULD) during their set so to be honest I didn’t see that much of it. I’ve seen them before and it was pretty good but this time I was super whatever about the whole affair.

Strange Boys: I honestly didn’t get it. I used to love the Strange Boys. “And Girls Club” is a solid record. the one after it is okay too. I’ve seen them live a few times and it’s been good. This was not that. I get that bands change ( how could I not?) but seriously? Seriously?? I mean they’re nice dudes but whew, MAYBE IT’LL GROW ON ME.

White Fence: I have a bad track record with this band. I’d seen White Fence three times before last night and I honestly can barely remember a moment of any set. It was just not clicking. But last night! They were so good last night, SO GOOD. The music sounded great, the song selection was perfect and Tim Presley was like, moving around and even made a sassy joke! It was really really great to see them open up a bit and really go for it. They’re fantastic musicians so with the added energy it was near perfect.

HAIR: the Hair band was Ty, Mikal, drummer of White Fence, Tim Presley and maybe Charlie? I don’t remember. All I could think was MORE. They only did two songs, Scissor People and Time, which are great tracks but everyone was dying for Easy Ryder, duh. Want to see them do the whole record top to bottom. I’d die.

Ty Segall: Truly Epic. He’s adjusted so well to big stages and performing live it’s kind of insane. The first time I saw Ty play was at Death By Audio in maybe 2008? Or 2009? He was shy and just ran through the songs like it was a pain to be there. I’ve seen him 1 billion times since then and it’s only gotten better and better. He’s really impressive, they all are (charlie, mikal and emily). Man those kids, so rad. Ty Segall band played a good selection of stuff reaching as far back as the S/T (they did a noisy, punky version of The Drag) with some new tracks sprinkled in. Ty periodically screamed into the microphone, goaded the audience into repeating after him and made all the eyes at his BFF Mikal. They sounded great, the energy was great, they play REALLY well together, the crowd was stoked, the BAND was stoked. It was just a really fucking good time. At one point Ty just screamed and screamed until Charlie, Mikal and Emily were laughing and it was a brilliant, defining moment of the whole set- manic energy and pure bliss.

Like four minutes after the show I was hung over and grumpy but today I’m thinking about it with a clear mind and a settled stomach and I think it was worth every penny.

Dude are the strange boys for real ?

But white fence is holding my attention this time- a true miracle.

Every time I see white fence I am too drunk too see white fence.

K, NOW A REAL LESS DRUNK REVIEW

Just saw Devin play live at Shea. punk tree house or whatever. I wanted to stay for the show after him too but I started feeling really sick from the smoke (i’m a sucker) about two hours in. So now I’m at home, kinda drunk, eating black bean and tofu soup in bed. So let’s talk Devin.

I’m not sure how to describe his live show. He’s extremely charismatic in a completely charming and adorable way. He puts on a weird accent that is somewhere between james brown and little richard and doesn’t let up for a second. Lots of screaming at the audience, lots of splits and back bends and pointing at people. Lots of faces. I was SO into it. Maybe he didn’t do full splits I don’t know but he got pretty close to the ground, definitely on his knees at least. It’s funny because despite the roots of garage rock being in rock n roll and blues, chuck berry and that end of the performance spectrum, current garage rock draws more from the shy, chilled out (and if not chilled out at least apathetic) side of things. There are  exceptions but for the most part it’s very detached. Even when it’s nobunny and hunx being outrageous they’re not electric (i guess this is disputable). They’re still detached in a way that I think their fans actually prefer. With Devin Therriault he puts his everything into it. From the look of him- leather jacket, shiny shoes and the cutest little bowl cut- to the screams and accents, it’s a big production. He’s absolutely capitvating and I had a great time watching him do his thing.

Now for the bad. There seemed to be a big disconnect between him and his band. It wasn’t that they didn’t get along it was that they didn’t match or make sense. Felt weird and thrown together. I don’t know. Also this is personal but I’ve been listening to his EP and demos for a couple months now cause that was all that was out there, now he’s got the record out on Frenchkiss and all the songs have been reworked and I can’t quite get into them. Bummed me out a little only because I can’t figure out why they were reworked in the first place? I think he’s really great and I think he could go far.

DRUNK AND INCOHERENT AS ALWAYS. STILL BETTER THAN THE WRITING ON YAHOO NEWS.
